UN urges fast action on Climate Change (2018)

In Oct, United Nations IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change) releases a Report “IPCC Special Report on Global Warmig of 1.5 Deg C”. IPCC.make an unprecedented call to action and said that to avoid catastrophe, all countries must change the way their people eat, commute, farm and build.

The IPCC report looks at what needs to be done to keep the world within a 1.5 deg C limit, one of the goals in the 2015 UN Paris Climate Agreement.

The world has already warmed about 1 deg C since pre-industrial time.

IPCC studies show that: To keep the world within a 1.5 Deg C limit, Global emissions of CO2 need to fall by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and reach ‘net zero’ around 2050.

If global emissions continue to rise at the current rate, global warming is likely to reach 1.5 deg C between 2030 to 2052. Under the Paris Agreement, current pledges to cut emissions would lead to a warming of about 3 deg C by 2100.

The report shows that what we do from now till 2030 is critical for CO2 emissions.

Economies would have to shift away rapidly from burning coal, oil and gas and invest  in renewable energy. People will have to change their energy use and change the foods they eat.

Limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to 2°C would lessen Climate Change impacts. For instance, by 2100, global sea level rise would be 10 cm lower with global warming of 1.5°C compared with 2°C. The likelihood of an Arctic Ocean free of sea ice in summer would be once per century with global warming of 1.5°C, compared with at least once per decade with 2°C. Coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5°C, whereas virtually all (> 99 percent) would be lost with 2°C

An Oct report “Options for keeping the food system within environmental limits”

published in Nature Journal shows that Huge reductions in meat-eating are essential to avoid dangerous climate change

The researchers found a global shift to a “flexitarian” diet was needed to keep climate change even under 2C, let alone 1.5C. This flexitarian diet means the average world citizen needs to eat 75% less beef, 90% less pork and half the number of eggs, while tripling consumption of beans and pulses and quadrupling nuts and seeds. This would halve emissions from livestock and better management of manure would enable further cuts.

In May, UK The Guardian publish an Article: “Avoiding meat and dairy is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth”.

A study “Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers” is published in the journal Science. The study created a huge dataset based on almost 40,000 farms in 119 countries and covering 40 food products that represent 90% of all that is eaten.

It shows that while meat and dairy provide just 18% of calories and 37% of protein, it uses the vast majority – 83% – of farmland and produces 60% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions.

[ In another words, 83% of the world’s farmland is used to produce meat and dairy (and the feed crops to feed the animals).

ALL the rice/veggies/fruits that human consume is produced on 17% of the world’s farmland !! ]

“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” said Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Thus, reducing meat consumption (at least by half) and encouraging meatless days/ veggie days is an essential step to fight climate change and preserve the world’s land, food and water resources.
