Water savings for Veg Diet

Ever wonder how much water can a person save if he changes from a meat diet to a veg diet? (even for just 1 day, e.g Meatless Monday)

From the Water Foot Print website:

The water footprint of the EU for different diets (2013):

Vanham, D., Mekonnen, M.M. and Hoekstra, A.Y.

Reference diet (REF) is the average EU28 diet for the reference period 1996–2005. It is the diet that the European population eats normally. It is a diet that comprise of beef, pork, chicken, eggs, milk, veg etc. It is a diet with 50 kg of meat/ year and 19 kg of fish/ year.  [This is similar to the diet the Singapore population eats. In 2015, our population consumes 55 kg of meat (pork/chicken/beef etc) and 22 kg of seafood per year.]

The VEG diet does not include meat, poultry and fish but includes milk and cheese.

….

The Reference EU (European Union) diet (meat diet) uses 4265 litres of water/capital/day

The VEG diet uses 2655 litres of water/ capital/day

Water Saving per day of switching from a meat diet to a Veg diet:

4265 – 2655 = 1610 lt/ cap/ day

Going Veg 1 day saves 1610 lt of water.

[Going Vegan, without milk products, would have even more water savings. :>]

Thus, if a person support Meatless Mondays, he will save 1610 lts of water every Monday. :>

If a person is vegetarian, he will save 1610 lts of water every day. :>

[Vegans save even more.]
