UNIPCC Climate Change & Land Report, UNEP/ EAT-Lancet “Planetary Health Diet”

In Aug 2019, United Nation IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) issued a “Climate Change and Land” special report. The report was the combined effort of more than 100 scientists from 52 countries.

The report shows that the World’s endeavor to keep Global Warming well below 2 Deg can be achieved only by reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from all sectors, including land and food.

The Report shows that Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) activities accounted for 23% of net GHG emissions. If emissions associated with pre- and post-production activities in the global food system are included, the emissions are estimated to be 21-37% of total net anthropogenic GHG emissions.

[The Global Food system emits up to 37% of the world’s GHG.]

It states that All assessed modelled pathways that limit warming to 1.5ºC or well below 2°C require land-based mitigation and land-use change, with most including different combinations of reforestation, afforestation, reduced deforestation and bioenergy.

Modeled pathways limiting global warming to 1.5°C and 2ºC project a 2 million km2 reduction to a 12 million km2 increase in forest area in 2050 relative to 2010.

(The World need to limit Deforestation and plant up to 12 million km2 of forest to keep GW to 1.5 Deg/ 2 Deg)

The report find that Global diet change (reduce meat consumption) is an effective way to reduce Climate change. Global Diet Change from the current diet to a mostly plant-based diet could free up several million km2 of Agriculture land (to grow forest) and provide a mitigation potential of up to 8 GtCO2/year by 2050.

“The report is not all bad news and finds that if more of the world’s population shifts toward plant-based diets and reduces their meat consumption, it could significantly boost the planet’s ability to fight climate change.

In Feb 2019, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) recommended the “Planetary Health Diet” created by EAT-Lancet Commission.

UNEP: Towards a Great Food Transformation:

https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/story/towards-great-food-transformation

Healthy diets based on sustainable food systems are necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, and scientific targets for healthy diets and sustainable food production are needed to guide what the EAT-Lancet Commission calls “a Great Food Transformation”.

“Sustainable food production for about 10 billion people should use no additional land, safeguard existing biodiversity, reduce consumptive water use and manage water responsibly, substantially reduce nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, produce zero carbon dioxide emissions, and cause no further increase in methane and nitrous oxide emissions,” says the study.

The EAT-Lancet Commission came up with a “planetary health diet” that does not completely banish meat and dairy but is plant-rich.

“This is an important study that echoes and supports UN Environment’s recent work,” says UN biodiversity expert Marieta Sakalian.

By Nov 2019, UNEP has promoted the “Planetary Health Diet” to 14 Cities:

https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/story/food-thought-dietary-changes-can-improve-our-health-health-planet

“Momentum is growing, however, for a shift to sustainable diets that protect the health of people and planet. At the C40 cities network summit in Copenhagen, just before this year’s celebration of World Food Day (16 Oct), 14 cities signed up to the Planetary Health Diet. If adopted universally, this diet would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, feed 10 billion people and save 11 million lives each year.

According to the EAT-Lancet Commission, a planetary health plate should consist largely of vegetables and fruits, with the rest made up with whole grains, plant protein sources, unsaturated plant oils, and, occasionally, small amounts of meat or fish.”

I’ll share more info on the “Planetary Health Diet” “

“Can we feed a future population of 10 billion people a healthy diet within planetary boundaries?”

EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health brought together 37 world-leading scientists from across the globe to answer the above question.: The answer is yes, but it will be impossible without transforming eating habits, improving food production and reducing food waste.

The “Planetary Health Diet” UN Environment/ Eat-Lancet recommended is a Plant-rich diet with 230 g of grains/ 300 g of vegetables/ 200 g of fruits and only 70 g of meat per day.

That is only 1 portion of meat per day.

Most Singaporeans are eating 4 to 5 portion of meat per day !

We have to look at reducing our meat consumption by Half and gradually reduce it to only 1 portion a day to eat sustainably to preserve the resources on the planet !

[ We can replace the meat portions with meat-alternatives such as ‘Beyond Meat’, ‘Impossible food’ or other Veggie meat-alternatives. We can also support Meatless Days, go Veggie whenever we can.:> ]

……

Bravo, UN IPCC, for announcing that a Global Diet change towards a more plant-based diet is necessary to keep the temp within a 1.5 Deg limit.

And thanks UNEP/Eat-Lancet Commission for promoting a Planet-friendly “Planetary Health Diet”.

Let’s hope the World will heed this advice and make the required Lifestyle changes to reduce Global warming and keep our younger generation safe from Climate Change.
